Purpose / scope
The purpose of this site is to establish a set of guiding principles that can be employed to enhance consistency across learn online course websites in the School of Education.
This learnonline site also contains examples of how these guiding principles can be put into practice within Education courses.
Note - These guidelines have been established based on research into fully online courses, however the guidelines outlined in this site can also benefit the online component of courses delivered in a blended or face-to-face mode.

About this site
The site centers around a set of guiding principles for online learning that have been established within the school.
In addition to the Overview of site tab there are 5 tabs:
Principles of Teaching Online - This tab introduces findings of research into best practice principles for online teaching.
Course Structure - This tab contains guidelines that relate to the overall structure of a course.
There are three parts to this tab,
- The first outlines the required course format and block position to be used in all School of Education course sites.
- The second outlines and demonstrates effective practices relating to the Welcome section of a course site.
- The third outlines and demonstrates effective practices relating to summarising and wrapping-up a course.
Topic / Week Structure - This tab outlines and demonstrates effective practices relating to the structure of course content.
Teaching for Active Online Learning -This tab outlines and demonstrates effective practices relating to activities to promote active online learning.
Assessment of Student Learning - This tab outlines and demonstrates effective practices relating to assessments.
Each of the guiding principles that relate to the topics outlined above are located within blue boxes as illustrated below. For each guiding principle the criteria is stated as well as standards relating to it. Examples that demonstrate the principle in practice will be located underneath the guiding principle.
