Topic outline

  • As a student and engineering professional, you need to be able to use evidence and sources convincingly and ethically.

In order to use sources convincingly, you need to identify the sources suitable for engineering, along with understanding the relative strengths and weaknesses of the arguments presented.

Further, the material used, should be done so in a way which follows the rules of referencing (using the APA 7 Referencing Guide).

Professional engineers are expected to attribute information in a way which gives due recognition to authors.  They are also expected to act with 'integrity'.  This includes not sharing, copying or in any way duplicating the work of another as though it were you own.

In these modules, you will have an opportunity to practice these important academic skills.

The examples shown below, demonstrate how sources are integrated and referenced in engineering writing.

In engineering writing you need to:

    Search for relevant sources

Evaluate which are the best sources to use

Integrate sources in a persuasive way

Reference sources to attribute the author

Act Ethically to ensure sources are used with honesty and integrity.

This resource has been prepared for you by learning advisers; teaching staff; an academic librarian and academic integrity officers.  Students and professional people from industry have also made a contribution.   Together, we have developed the SEIRA resource for Engineering students.
