    Just listen (6:27 mins)

'Just listen' shows staff in a busy office of a college responding to enquiries from students from culturally and linguistically diverse backgrounds. One staff member, John, makes a number of errors of judgment which results in him giving confusing and inappropriate information to prospective students.

The purpose of Just listen is to promote discussion about maintaining quality communication with students and community members who are not fluent speakers of English.

To be or not to be (4:44 mins)

'To be or not to be' shows a teacher, Mrs Chedda, grappling with increasing levels of discrimination and racism towards her from students. Finding racist graffiti about her on a wall at the school is the last straw that provokes Mrs Chedda into action.

The purpose of 'To be or not to be' is to promote discussion about the need to address complex and difficult issues such as racism among staff, students and communities of schools and colleges; ways of dealing with racism and other difficult issues in schools and colleges; ways of dealing with complaints about racism in schools and colleges; and reasons for perceived levels of difficulty in dealing with inappropriate behaviours among students compared to dealing with similar behaviours among staff.

    No yakking (3:45 mins)

In 'No yakking', two students, Mei Ling and Martha, face difficulties when they use their first language, Chinese, before and during class. Their teacher, Mr Fraser, initially objects to the students speaking Chinese in class. He changes his mind after the students demonstrate the effectiveness of using their first language to support their learning.

The purpose of No Yakking is to promote discussion about students using their first language in class to support their learning and their learning of English; common misconceptions about the use of first language by students; and accommodating use of first language in teaching and learning tasks.
