Topic outline

  • Video in contemporary culture is both accessible and familiar. It has become an integral part of our day to day activity due to the increase in built-in video capabilities in our phones and other mobile device. Both capture and playback are literally at our fingertips so why not capitalise on this ease of use from both a production and learning perspective.

Build on what students are familiar with to engage, stimulate and enhance their learning experience. Provide resources that are available on a learner's mobile device to make learning both flexible and accessible. Provide resources so that students can watch a video and think about a topic to be discussed at the tutorial they're travelling to or online session they will login to later in the day. Help them to "arrive" prepared and ready to engage.

Create a video to help students understand the critical points of a topic or aspects that they may struggle with. A five-minute, targeted video can help to clarify concepts and convey information that may take students hours to understand with traditional delivery methods.

Since video is such a powerful communication medium, why not use it to provide valuable assessment feedback to students. It can also be more time efficient than producing written feedback.

Continuing the thread of powerful communication; why should video production be a one-sided affair? Engage your students even further by setting video assignments that allows them to communicate their understanding of a topic in a succinct and direct manner.

You may be thinking; how is this possible without a full video production team waiting in the wings? Easily; if you accept that video can be produced in a variety of styles that are appropriate for different pedagogic applications. Hollywood production isn't always the answer to your video requirements and in fact, can be inappropriate as a learning stimulus. A three-minute video "selfie" made with your mobile phone can hit the spot and help a student through a difficult learning point more effectively than a high-end production. It's also à la minute rather than missing the moment because professional video staff won't be available for another six weeks.
