Wherever it is possible and appropriate to do so, all research degree candidates at UniSA should have a panel of supervisors including end-users, appointed as early as possible in candidature so they can all be involved at an early point in the co-creation of research projects, and can also play take active roles in advising and mentoring research degree candidates. Supervisory Panels make provision for expert and multidisciplinary supervision teams, with the inclusion of end-users of the research. End-users can be drawn from a wide range of social and economic sectors, including, but not limited to, private enterprise; federal, state or local government; and the not for profit or voluntary sector. Panels may be formed to supervise a single candidate, or, depending on the nature of the collaboration and the research topics, a single panel configuration may be suitable for supervising a number of candidates over a period of time.
This resource is designed to support the development and operation of Supervisory Panels for UniSA's research degree candidates. It begins with an overview of the University policy framework for supervision before outlining the roles and responsibilities of different categories of members of a panel. It includes a guide to the UniSA support and resources available to supervisors in the area of panel supervision (in addition to this resource) and also a Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ) section which will be added to as questions arise. It draws on the document Supervisory Panels at UniSA: Framework & Guidelines which can be found here.
It concludes with a guide to some of the academic literature on panel and team supervision, together with links to the individual items, to allow you to read further on the topic should you wish.
If you have any comments on or suggestions for improving this resource (or any questions you think should be added to the FAQ section), please contact HDRSupervision@unisa.edu.au .
