Administrative support
A 'case manager' who provides necessary administrative support is appointed for every oral defence. Administrative support for the oral defence plays a critical part in ensuring its success, perhaps especially given the technical nature of the process in the Australian context. The case manager prepares for the oral defence beginning from seven to ten weeks in advance of the meeting, leading up to the day of the meeting. Some of the key areas of responsibility of the case manager are listed below:
- Room bookings and facilities (air conditioning, room layout);
- Campus access and security;
- Communication with student to ensure they arrive on time with everything they need (thesis copy, examiner reports); and,
- Returning resources upon completion of the oral defence.
