Editing Tools

The editing toolbar is displayed where content can be added or edited in course sites, and provides access to commonly used functions such as:

  • Format text.
  • Insert/edit an image.
  • Insert/edit a link.
  • Paste content.
  • Insert an emoticon.
  • View and edit HTML.
  • Page preview.

Many of the editing toolbar icons look and function the same as the editing icons in Microsoft applications. Hovering your mouse over an icon will give you a description.

Format Text

  • Select (highlight) the text to be formatted.

  • Select the relevant menu or icon to format the text as follows:
A. Toggle Toolbar
B. Change font family
C. Change font size
D. Change font style

Add or remove:


F. Align text:
Align left
Align centre
Align right
Align full (justify)
G. Change text/background colour:
Select text colour
Select background colour (highlight text)
H. Change text direction:
Direction left to right
Direction right to left
I. Add or remove bullet points or numbered points, and indent or outdent text:
Unordered list (bullet points)
Ordered list (numbered list)

Note: Position the cursor over a formatting icon to display a brief description of its function.

  • Select Post to forum.

Insert Links

Select text

  1. Select the text or image to be linked.
  2. Select the Insert/edit link icon (looks like a chain link).

Enter URL

  1. Enter (or paste) the website address. Note: Include http:// at the start of the web address.
  2. Select to open in a new window if link goes to a website external to the current website.
  3. Select Create link. 

And your link will appear in the edit window. 

Edit and Remove links

Select the link

  1. Select the linked text or image.
  2. Select the Insert/edit link icon.

Edit General properties

  1. Update the link details in the General properties section as required.
  2. Select Update.

Select Save changes

  • Select Save changes.

Remove an existing link

Remove a link

  1. Select the linked text or image.
  2. Select the Unlink icon.
  3. Select Save changes.

Copy and paste from word

It is recommended you use the Paste from Word function to remove hidden Microsoft characters/code which may affect how the content appears. Most normal formatting will be retained.

Before you start

  • Select and copy the Word content to be pasted

Select Paste from Word

  1. Select the location the content is to be pasted.
  2. Select the Paste from Word icon.

Paste from Word

  1. Hold the Ctrl (Control) key and press the V key.
  2. Select Insert.

Save changes

  • Select Save changes.

Add a Table

Before you start

When creating a table ensure that you:

  • Provide a table summary
  • Create a header cell
  • Set the table width as a percentage of the page (instead of a fixed pixel width)

Insert table

  1. Select where the table is to be inserted.
  2. Select the Inserts a new table icon.

Table - General properties

  1. Enter the number of columns.
  2. Enter the number of rows.
  3. Enter the cell padding if required.
  4. Enter the cell spacing if required.
  5. Select the table alignment if required.
  6. Enter the border width (in pixels) if required.
  7. Enter the table width if required.
    Note: It is suggested the table width be specified as a percentage of the page (rather than in pixels).
  8. Enter the table height (in pixels) if required.

Select Advanced

  • Selected Advanced.

Advanced tab

  1. Enter a description.
  2. Select a background image if required.
  3. Select the border colour if required.
  4. Select the table background colour if required.
  5. Select Insert.

Complete table and save

  1. Enter content.
  2. Select Save changes.

Edit a table

Select area to edit

  • Select cell, row or column to edit.

  • Select the relevant icon to perform the required function:
A. Table row properties (update row properties)
B. Table cell properties (update cell properties)
C. Insert row before (insert new row above current row)
D. Insert row after (insert new row below current row)
E. Delete row (delete the current row)
F. Insert column before (insert new column to left of current column)
G. Insert column after (insert new column to right of current column)
H. Remove column (delete current column)
I. Split merged table cells
J. Merge table cells

HTML editor

  • Select the Edit HTML Source icon.

  1. Update the HTML code in the HTML Source Editor section as required.
  2. Select Update.

Resize the edit window

  • Position the cursor over the Resize window icon.

  • Left-click and hold the mouse button, drag the cursor to resize the window, then release the mouse button.
