SMARTER Goals
As mentioned in the video, the acronym SMART stands for
- Specific goals describing
- Who is involved?
- Why it is important? In some cases this can be incorporated into the evaluation of Excited below
- What is needed to be done?
- When is it to be done?
- How is it going to be done?
- Measurable to enable identification of when the goal has been achieved. In the context of your career, the measurement may be months or years.
- Achievable to ensure your motivation is maintained
- If the goal is too far into the future, you may lose motivation before it is achieved.
- Frustration through not seeing results can lead to frustration and the objective being abandoned.
- Identify any obstacles to the success of the goal which you cannot influence or foresee. In some cases, this is considered in Resources below
- Are there sufficient resources available to achieve the goal?
- Achievable does not mean it will be easy.
- Realistic in the availability of resources - skill and money included.
- What life changes are required to enable success
- Time bound so that you have a goal date for completion. If this does not exist, motivation is easily lost through procrastination - put it off until tomorrow.
There have been some extensions to this initial acronym with the addition of ER. In some cases, the additional elements are considered as a follow-up of the process, but in some cases they add to the detail of the previous definition.
- Ethical, Exciting, Evaluated
- Were all actions taken ethical?
- Are you interested in the final product?
- How successful were you in achieving your goal?
- Review, Revise, Resources
- If the goal was not achieved as expected, what happened and how can you change your goals to learn from the experience?
- Lists of resources available and obstacles to address
