Topic outline

  • This website is a repository of information and background regarding a pilot project undertaken with funding from a UniSA Teaching and Learning Development Grant (2019).

The project aims to improve online learning engagement and outcomes for students enrolled in an internal (on-campus) program at UniSA.

Managing students’ expectations and preparing them for online learning is critical for student engagement. Student engagement, a complex, multifaceted construct, includes elements of affect (e.g., interest, belonging), cognition (e.g., mastery of knowledge/skill), and behaviour (e.g., time/effort, participation) (Kahu 2011).  Course evaluations highlight students’ preference for face-to-face over online learning, with feedback indicating a de-valuing of time for, and need for greater guidance in online learning.  This feedback indicates negative affective and behavioural elements of student engagement, which may impact on student learning, satisfaction and wellbeing (Kahu 2011).
