ACKNOWLEDGEMENT OF COUNTRY
We acknowledge the Traditional Owners of Country and the lands throughout Australia, and recognise the Traditional Owners continuing connection to land, waters. skies and culture. We pay our respects to Elders past and present. We celebrate the stories, culture and traditions of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islanders Elders and of all communities who also work and live on this land.
We also acknowledge the children, youth and the adults that hold the key to pave the path for a better future for all. Sovereignty was never ceded. This always was, always will be Aboriginal land.

*GOTAFS will be run as a face-to-face half-day workshop at City West campus again in early 2025.
Have you ever wanted to ask someone any of the following questions about your research degree, whether it be a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) or Masters by Research (MRes)?
- What exactly is a research degree?
- So, I've met my supervisors and the research administrators within my Academic Unit or Research Centre. Who else is there here at UniSA that I should get to know, and how can they help me?
- What's the range of research and other skills I can develop by attending EDGEx workshops?
- What is a supervisory panel? How can I interact effectively with my supervisors?
- How am I going to be able to balance my research degree and the other aspects of my life?
- How can I meet other research degree candidates?
- How can I take care of myself throughout my research degree?
If so, GOTAFS (Getting Off to a Flying Start) is for you!
GOTAFS is a half-day research induction workshop developed specifically for commencing Higher Degree by Research candidates at UniSA to help you transition into your studies as successfully as possible.
(And, by the way, the above questions are all ones that we have been asked by other commencing research degree candidates. You're not alone!)
We've recently complemented the face-to-face event by moving the workshop into an online format built around videos of presentations given at earlier GOTAFS workshops. We've also included a number of additional resources that may be useful to you as you make the transition into your research degree.
Topics addressed in the workshop cover:
- the requirements of a PhD and Masters by Research;
- effective strategies for making the most of your current research reading by connecting the three cognitive activities of reading, thinking and writing;
- some useful tips about accessing the vast range of library resources and services available to students studying for a higher degree by research;
- strategies for working effectively with your supervisory panel;
- strategies for maintaining a work/life balance; and,
- ergonomics and your research degree.
Please note that in this resource we use the terms 'doctoral' and 'PhD' to include Masters by Research degrees. Where reference is being made specifically to PhD or to Masters by Research degrees or candidates that will be made explicit. This is done to improve what might otherwise come across as a clumsy and repetitive writing style.
We hope you find this resource helpful to you as you commence your candidature. If you have any queries or feedback you would like to provide about this resource, please do not hesitate to contact Dr Cassandra Loeser who works in the Research Education Team, Research and Innovation Services, Mawson Lakes campus (Email: cassandra.loeser@unisa.edu.au)
