Topic outline

  • NB: From 2022, all students new to their program will have had to provide evidence of a training position at the time of their application. Some information here is applicable primarily for students who started their program prior to 2022. Any new students must inform program staff immediately if they are no longer in a training position.

Students who started their program prior to 2022, and who have not yet secured a traineeship are strongly encouraged to continue applying for traineeships to ensure their enrolment from Level 1 to Level 2 courses progresses smoothly.

    Supervision

Students must be supervised in their traineeship by ASAR qualified sonographer. It is vital that students are aware of the UniSA sonography logbook requirements, and that they work to ensure that any training opportunities they are offered will support them in meeting these requirements.

Important note: International students must be supervised by an ASAR comparable supervisor.

International students who are completing their 2200 hours of supervised scanning hours in an overseas clinical site must notify the Program Director of their supervisory arrangements and will be asked to request from their supervisor evidence to demonstrate that their supervisor qualifications are comparable to:

    1. ASAR registered sonographer, or
    2. Doctors with Fellowship from their professional bodies, comparable to Australian Fellows from our Royal colleges which allow them to perform and/ or report ultrasound scans in their home country.
    3. For Uni purposes, we are happy to accept training completed overseas, as long as they meet the criteria mentioned above.
    4. Students need to contact ASAR directly if they have any queries in relation to training conducted overseas and how this applies to sonographer registration in Australia https://www.asar.com.au/home

The Clinical Placement Unit (CPU) will email students each study period requesting the details of their traineeship and Supervisor. All students, local and international, are asked to complete and return this form as instructed  by CPU when requested.

    Unpaid or Voluntary Traineeships

The University will cover students who have agreed to an unpaid or voluntary traineeship under the University’s Student Insurance.

This requirement only applies to students with Australian residency with traineeships in an Australian clinical site.

Students in this scenario must email CPU with the details of their traineeship and supervisor to ensure they are covered by the University’s student insurance. Email: CPU.office@unisa.edu.au

From time to time, students are offered training positions for which the student is being charged by the radiology practice. We support the Australasian Sonographers Association position statement about student sonographers paying for clinical training positions.

    Clinical Milestones

Current and continuing Students who are already enrolled in the program must log in to access the Program Clinical Training page to know more details about expectations and details of submission of clinical milestone assessments.
