Topic Introduction

This course aims to provide you with the knowledge and understanding you need in order to start your journey as an effective arts educator.

To start with, the spotlight is on you as a lifelong learner (Graduate Quality 2). The course acknowledges that you are a beginning teacher with a developing body of knowledge. It looks back and to the future, aiming to connect your specialised 'funds of knowledge' with educational theory to support you develop authentic and effective arts pedagogies as a pre-service arts educator (Graduate Quality 1). 

Arts learning as part of balanced education is provided for all children and young people via:

  • The National Curriculum (ACARA) primary and secondary years (Foundation to year 10)

As a future professional with an education degree, you will lead children and are likely to lead others in the field. Consequently, you need to be informed and knowledgeable. In addition, you may need to be able to advocate for arts education by communicating the goals and value of this learning area to other professionals and members of the community (Graduate Quality 6).

 

Topic Outcomes

At the end of the topic you will be able to:

  1. critically discuss the breadth of your current knowledge, skills, and understanding across the arts
  2. articulate areas of specific expertise within your arts discipline
  3. audit current strengths and areas for development within your teaching practice
