The University of South Australia offers three Postgraduate Programs in the Medical Sonography General stream.
These are:
Graduate Diploma in Medical Sonography (General) (Program Code: GEN-IGSO)
Master of Medical Sonography (General) (Program Code: GEN-IMSO)
Graduate Certificate in Breast Imaging (Program Code : ICBR)
The Graduate Diploma is a prescribed program (course) consisting of eight courses (subjects).
Since our postgraduate programs are based on a nested model, the Master of Medical Sonography is comprised of the same eight core courses, with students either selecting an additional four elective courses according to their specific areas of interest or undertaking research courses to complete the program.
The purpose of this submission is to apply for reaccreditation by ASAR for both the Graduate Diploma in Medical Sonography and the Master of Medical Sonography under the General Sonography category and for the Graduate Certificate in Breast Imaging under the Breast Sonography category.
Terminology at the University of South Australia:
Please note that the following terminology is used at the University of South Australia.
Study Period – There are two Study Periods utilised by the sonography program.
- Study Period 2 equates to Semester 1
- Study Period 5 equates to Semester 2
Course – is used instead of “subject” (e.g. A student studying part-time can enrol in two courses in each study period. e.g. Course Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation and Course Professional Issues for Sonographers).
Program – is used instead of “course” (eg Sonography program)
Unit – the standard subject size at UniSA is 4.5 units with a full year load being 36 units. A 4 year program is 144 units. Each unit is worth about 35 hours of student work.
Please note: In this documentation for accreditation purposes, we have used ASAR terminology throughout, i.e. we have used 'Courses' as per ASAR instead of 'Programs' and 'Subjects' instead of 'Courses' as required.
The reason UniSA terminology has been explained above is to avoid any confusion when the assessors access our learnonline links, where they will encounter UnISA terminology instead of ASAR terminology.
Links to the learnonline sites will have to be specifically enabled and UniSA will do this once advised of the members of the CAC.
