An induction program involving a mix of face-to-face sessions, on line and text-based resources is available for all new academic staff. A Survival Guide and a Teaching Observation list of potential mentor staff are provided to new academic staff members commencing at UniSA.
All staff are appointed a professorial lead who meet with staff at regular intervals and conduct a yearly performance development meeting. These professorial leads assist staff with their academic staff development and suggest relevant learning sessions that can be completed. They also monitor staff performance and student feedback.
Academic staff who teach at the University of South Australia are expected to develop inclusive, student-centred teaching approaches which are delivered through a range of flexible learning options. Resources are provided to support the University's Teaching and Learning Framework and to offer practical advice to academic staff who teach. More information relating to this can be found here.
The weekly Announcement bulletin emailed to all staff includes a section on Professional Development and advertises currently available professional development workshops available for staff to register for.The Teaching Innovation Unit facilitates UniSA's Teaching and Learning Framework and research supervision through leadership in the scholarship of teaching, academic development, and online education support. Supervisor development, as well as assistance for staff in the develop of grant and award applications is also provided.
The University also allocates Professional Development Funds (PDF) to be used for staff professional development; that is, to improve, develop and update knowledge, skills, abilities and competencies in research, teaching, community engagement and administration. The outputs from these improvements and developments benefit the individual and advance the strategic priorities of the University and their Division, Research Institute, Portfolio or Academic Unit.
The University also offers opportunities for academic staff to pursue higher degrees such as PhD or Masters. One of our current staff members Sandy Maranna is midway through her PhD candidature whilst staff Angela Farley and Emilie Rasheed are currently undertaking masters by research degrees.
Samples of professional activities undertaken by the staff have been described in a document below.
