Successful completion of our Medical Sonography courses relies significantly on each student's practice-based learning.
Students are required to learn to scan a variety of ultrasound examinations as they complete their minimum of 2200 supervised scanning hours. This scanning experience must be documented in the provided logbook, verified and signed off by their supervisors. At the beginning of the capstone course Clinical Sonography Portfolio, students are required to audit their logbook and then have a meeting with their course coordinator and supervisor to discuss any areas to be focussed on within their final 6 months.
In addition to learning hands-on skills at their workplace, students are also introduced to a variety of innovative technology-enhanced teaching and learning practices in the curriculum, designed for a seamless academic progression.
Our academic staff are highly qualified and skilled senior sonographers dedicated to the profession.
To enrich student learning, our Courses have implemented curriculum around competencies outlined by ASA and ASAR mandatory requirements.
Curriculum design is highly learner-focussed and has been undertaken in consultation with experts from the UniSA Teaching Innovation Unit (TIU).
Dedicated, compulsory subjects covering all competencies have been designed, namely Professional Issues for Sonographers, Ultrasound Physics and Instrumentation, Abdominal, Vascular, Superficial Parts, Musculoskeletal and Obstetric and Gynaecologic Sonography. For those competencies such as paediatrics without specific compulsory subjects, the required content has been amalgamated into the relevant subject(s) above.
Well-designed simulation tools have been incorporated into our teaching for greater efficiency and effectiveness in instruction.
Assessment tasks and feedback are integral to our teaching and learning practices and are constructively aligned with the learning objectives and learning resources to achieve graduate competencies.
Course outcome data has been presented as evidence under the Criteria 1.1, 1.2, and 1.4 heading. Further evidence is provided for Criterion 1.7 (ERRs) and in the Self-study report with its associated attachments.
The teaching and learning strategies used to achieve competencies across all of the core and scanning courses are provided below.
