All Clinical Assessment Tools (CATs) will be completed online by students using the templates in their PebblePad workbooks. There are a total of 26 CATs that students will complete across the course of their program. CATs may be completed while on placement or when providing care to women through the Continuity of Care Experiences (CoCE).
When students complete CATs, they undertake clinical care under direct supervision of a midwife who will assess their ability to complete components of the Clinical Assessment Tool. We understand that sometimes a student may not demonstrate or address all components of the tool - they can be assessed on what is relevant in the context of the clinical care that they provided. The following document outlines the background behind the development of the Clinical Assessment Tools and provides guidance for using them. it also outlines the Modified Bondy Scale, which is used when assessing students. This scale incorporates five levels (Independent; Proficient; Assisted; Supported; Dependent)which relate to the assessment of students at
a beginning level of midwifery practice, i.e. assessed at a midwifery student level (as distinct from a qualified
midwife who would have mastery of these clinical skills). The scale is not designed so that ‘Independent’ is
something that can only be attained when the student is ready to be endorsed as a midwife.
