There are 26 Clinical Assessment Tools that enable students to demonstrate a wide variety of skills across all areas of midwifery care. Each ELA has been mapped to include CATs that align with the learning undertaken during that placement and these CATs link to the theoretical knowledge that is to be applied to clinical practice in the ELA. The CATs for each ELA will be in the PebblePad ELA workbook and all CATs will also appear in your CAT workbook on PebblePad. Throughout your program, while on clinical placement or through CoCE, you are expected to complete CATs all CATs as outlined below. PLEASE NOTE: Students who have received credit for any ELA courses do not need to complete all 26 CATs - they are required to complete the ones that are linked to their respective ELA courses.
The table below shows the mapping of CATs to the ELAs.

Across the program, students will be required to show an increased quality of performance as described by the Bondy Scale. The table below demonstrates the progression of skills over the course of the program. During the first year of the program, students will be required to complete four CATs at least once, at an ‘assisted’ level. Across the second year of the program, students will be required to complete 10 CATs, at least once, at a ‘proficient’ level. In the final year of the program, students will be expected to complete 12 CATs and achieve ‘proficient’ or ‘independent’ level. This will be clearly specified in the ELA portfolio course outline. CATs can be assessed during the ELA (practice experience practicums) and/or through CoCE.
The CATs must be completed in the year which aligns with the ELA that they are allocated to. For example, if students do not have the opportunity to complete the newborn injection CAT in ELA2, it can be completed at any time during your second year of study. If students are in first year and have the opportunity to undertake a newborn injection, they can do so, but the CAT cannot be completed until the second year as it is assumed that this will allow the student to demonstrate the level of knowledge and skills appropriate to their year level.
