Pebblepad is an online, real time platform where midwifery students document their clinical experiences directly onto their mobile devices. Our students have been using PebblePad for some years now, so the initial hesitance in allowing students to access mobile devices in the clinical areas has changed as it is now a more recognised practice. We suggest that as a common courtesy, students ensure that they inform the women in their care and their supervising midwife or doctor that they are using their device in the capacity of clinical learning.
Each of the five ELAs has a dedicated workbook on Pebblepad and this includes a place for:
Students to document their learning objectives and to review the outcomes of each objective at the end of their placement (Students should develop a minimum of 2 learning objectives for each 2 week block of placement)
Students to document their attendance hours and record the names of their supervising midwives
Students to document details of the interactions with their Clinical Facilitators
Document the CATs that they complete which are linked directly to the ELA
Supervising midwives to provide written feedback to support student learning (ideally this should occur every shift)
Clinical Facilitators to complete the student's Standards Assessment (their summative assessment) at the end of their 2 week placement block
In addition to the ELA workbooks, students also have workbooks where they document their clinical experiences. The purpose of this is two fold. Firstly, it provides evidence of the required clinical experiences that are needed in order for a student to register as a midwife, but importantly, it also provides an opportunity for the student to link their theoretical knowledge to the application of clinical care. These records should be detailed, including full clinical and psychosocial history, any investigations, tests and results, medical and midwifery management, details of collaboration with other health professionals and outcomes. These workbooks and the documents that the student completes while on placement will provide a opportunity for you to review, discussion and debrief about the clinical care that the student has been involved in and will help you to assist the student to further link theory to practice.
As you know, midwives must be reflective practitioners and this premise is embedded in our program, with the student having to undertake written reflections about their clinical experiences. It is not your role to review their reflections, however the discussion and debriefing that you facilitate with the student will assist them in their capacity to reflect on the care that they provide.
We have a dedicated support person for PebblePad so if you have any issues accessing student workbooks or understanding how to use the platform, please contact the PebblePad Coordinator CHS-PebblePad@unisa.edu.au
