UniSA Continuity of Care Experience (CoCE) Coordinator
The Continuity of Care Experience (CoCE) requires students to follow 15 women through their childbearing journey by attending a minimum of 4 antenatal episodes of care, attending the labour/birth if possible and visiting with the woman twice in the postnatal period.
CoCE antenatal or postnatal appointments
Students are not to miss placement shifts in order to attend CoCE appointments. Occasionally, students may have a CoCE woman who is attending an appointment in the venue where they are undertaking placement. Students MAY be able to attend the appointment during their shift only if they have discussed this with their supervising midwife and it has been determined that it is appropriate for the student to leave their allocated placement for a short period of time. The priority should always be the care of the woman/women to whom the student is allocated.
CoCE Births
They may arrange to attend CoCE births at a different venue instead of placement but must liaise with the Clinical Facilitator and must attend a make up shift for hours missed.
If the student cares for a CoCE woman in labour during her placement, as this affects the required hours, the student will still need a makeup shift.
A midwifery student can be involved in the intrapartum care of the woman for a maximum of 12 hours only. This must then be followed by a minimum 8-hour break.
