Extra-Curricular Activities

Extra-Curricular Activities provide you a way to accrue hours towards your Professional Practice Program outside of in-industry experience and in-curriculum. Extra-Curricular activities should assist you in attaining the EA Stage 1 Competencies listed in ‘Table 3: Professional and Personal Attributes'.

In the below calendar, we share activities that we know of, and advise of the PPP hour amount you can gain by attending. You are also welcome to source activities yourself, and if they fit within our approved activities you can also gain PPP hours for these.

PPP hours are automatically allocated for events that are run by the UniSA Careers Team. For any other activities, you are required to upload the details and evidence for what you are claiming to InPlace for our team to review. Find the InPlace instructions here

After you have attended an activity or event, it is suggested you write a small reflective piece and save it in your e-portfolio. This will assist you when writing your final reflective report in future. Please ensure that you register using your UniSA student email account so that it is easier for the provider to track your registration so you can obtain your PPP hours.

Workplace Interaction

If you are currently employed in a non-engineering job (eg Woolworths), you may apply to have up to 80 hours counted towards your Extra-Curricular Activities hours total.

You will need to demonstrate that the activities you have undertaken at your workplace have enabled you to develop some of the Professional and Personal Attributes outlined in the EA Stage 1 Competencies listed in ‘Table 3: Professional and Personal Attributes'.

If you would like to submit a request to claim these hours, you will need to:

  1. Complete a PPP Workplace Interaction: Professional and Personal Competency Development form
  2. Email the completed form to the STEM Industry Experience Team (IE Team)

Your application will then be reviewed and you will be notified of the outcome via your UniSA student email.

Any approved workplace Interaction hours will be accrued in your PPP hours total by the IE Team (under Extra-Curricular Activities).

Please note: You can claim a maximum of 80 hours  for workplace interaction. These hours can only be claimed once.

White Card Training

Are you going into industry over the summer break? Do you need to enter a construction site?  If so, you will need a White Card.

Don't  have a White Card?

Anyone who works on a building/construction site, must hold a White Card.

To obtain your White Card you must complete one day of training and the required assessment, through a registered training provider.

White Card training specifies the mandatory work health and safety knowledge and provides the participant with a common understanding of WHS principles and practices used on construction sites in Australia.

      Course Content:

  • Legislation
  • Hazard Management
  • Identifying and reporting common construction hazards
  • Understanding risk control measures
  • Responding to potential incidents and emergencies
  • Selecting and fitting common personal protective equipment (PPE)
  • Safe Use of Plant and Equipment
  • Safety Signs
  • Licencing and Certification
  • Accident and Incident Reporting
  • Site Emergency and Evacuation
  • Site and Public Safety

When you have successfully completed the assessment and received your White Card this will last for the duration of your working life as it does not expire.

Students can choose which registered training provider to use to complete White Card Training.  All costs are paid for by the student.

There are two companies that UniSA recommend for White Card Training:

Hackathons

A Hackathon is a 2-3 day creative, intensive competition where a diverse group of people solve problems using technology as an enabler. They’ve been used for many years and were made famous by the likes of Google, Facebook and Atlassian.

These companies have used hackathons for recruitment, onboarding, community activation, sourcing and testing ideas to solve business problems, partnership and employee engagement. Features such as the ‘like’ button and ‘search’ bar on Facebook were created through hackathons.

Hours approved for use towards the required PPP hours will change dependant upon the content of the specific Hackathon.

For upcoming opportunities please see here: Extra-Curricular Activities
