Publish or patent?
Publish or patent? You can do both.
Publishing and patenting can work in synergy as long as researchers engage ITEK, the University's commercialisation company, early so that the required steps (eg prior art search and IP protection, such as filing of a provisional patent) can take place.
Are publications and citations enough?
A patent is more important and very difficult to get. You need to protect your intellectual property (IP) before publicising your research.
If you think your research may be patentable, you should definitely contact ITEK, prior to:
- publishing your research
- giving a presentations or demonstration of your research.
