Occasionally our students may not meet the expectations required to achieve a pass level for their clinical placement. This could relate to deficits in skill acquisition, an inadequate knowledge base, poor communication, unprofessional behaviour or unsafe practice. When this occurs, we work closely with you and the student to provide counselling and remediation to support them to work toward improving and ideally being able to pass the course.
Students may be placed on a 'Clinical Challenge', where strict parameters are defined for the student to meet in order to achieve improvement and pass the course. If you have concerns about a student, in the first instance, please contact the Course Coordinator who will discuss options around addressing the issue you identify. The Course Coordinator will respond to your feedback and recommendations and will make a plan for the student going forward.
The Clinical Challenge contract is between the student and the clinical venue. It will provide parameters that the student will need to meet in order to pass the placement. The student will be given resources and activities that they should use to support their improvement. It is expected that you will work closely with the student, meeting them at regular intervals over the duration of the Clinical Challenge to assess their progress. Please contact the Course Coordinator part way through the period of the Clinical Challenge in order to provide an update. If you have ongoing concerns about a student's performance, please contact us sooner, rather than later.
Students are only able to undertake one Clinical Challenge per ELA. If the student does not pass the Clinical Challenge, they will fail the ELA course and will need to repeat tjhe course in its entirety, at the next offering.
