Assessments Summary

On completion of the assessments in this course, students should be able to:

  1. Describe the aviation industry and many aspects that it contains.
  2. Explain the operational aspects that varies between commercial airlines, corporate aviation, the military and emergency medical aviation.
  3. Describe the principles that all aviation components must do in order to operate cooperatively within airspace management.
  4. Communicate clearly in management settings

The assessment in this course is focused on Project Based Learning. This means that you learn from doing real engineering projects and activities, rather than just collecting and regurgitating information from lectures and texts.

Find out more about Project Based Learning (28 KB).

In the Project Based Learning in this course, we hope that you will spend much of your time learning by:

  • SCOPING ... identifying what you need to know
  • RESEARCHING ... finding out (from the library, internet, colleagues, etc)
  • COLLABORATING ... teaching each other
  • APPLYING ... using your new knowledge to develop the project

You will complete a range of learning activities and a group project for this course. Assignment 2 and assignment 3 (group project) will have a list of tasks you need to submit, activities you need to complete, and resources you need to explore.

Below you will find a list of the three assignments in this course. Make sure you understand the requirements, the deadlines for submission, and the submission methods for each task of each assignment. The assessment in this course will be as follows:

You will have up to 30 minutes to complete each quiz, though some quizzes may not require that much time.  You are welcome to use any of the course materials during the quizzes, though the quizzes will be very difficult to complete without having come to class.

Please note the assessment duration states the quiz duration to be a maximum of 1 hour, but to reduce student burden, the quizzes will be written only for 30 minutes of material.

Assessment #2 - Individual Assignment

During the second week of class, you will be divided into working groups for the remainder of the semester.  You are strongly encouraged to get to know your group members in depth, as you will be working together throughout the semester.

Each group will be required to complete a group project based on an aviation industry topic that will be introduced in the first half of the semester.  Group projects will be divided into five parts (introduction, background, operations, for example), and each group member will have responsibility for one section.

The primary task (Task A) of this individual assessment is to complete the individual part of the group project. This will require students to write a 1500 word essay on their group's topic with their individual component.  At the end of the semester, these individual components will be combined for the group presentation as a whole. Further details about Task A will be presented during the semester, including topic choices for each group and a breakdown of individual components.

Due: Task A is due at the end of Week 6, to be submitted through LearnOnline by 5:00 PM.

 ----------------------

Task B requires students to complete a draft of their resume as directed through class tutorials.  The purpose of this task is to not only build a proper resume, but also allow for teaching staff to provide feedback before the end of the semester, so students have the chance to make changes.

Due: Task B is due at the end of Week 6, to be submitted through LearnOnline by 5:00 PM.

-----------------------

Due: Task C is the final draft of the resume, and must be submitted by the end of Week 13 through LearnOnline by 5:00 PM.

Please note that Task C is due at the end of the study period while Tasks A and B are due in Week 6.

Assessment #3 - Group Project

As explained in Assessment 2, students will be divided into groups to conduct a group project for Assessment 3.  The group project has 3 components:

Task A: Groups will be required to complete a "Group Project Report". This is an original report co-written by group members that discusses how the team collaborated to complete the presentation.  Primarily reflective in nature, this report should document the process of developing the group project and how the team communicated.  Further details regarding the specific content and grading criteria will be disseminated during the study period.

Due: Task A: The due date for this report is the Friday of Week 13, submitted through the designated learnonline portal by 5:00 PM.

-----------------------------------

Task B:  This is an in-class group presentation.  Groups will be randomly assigned a time slot during week 12 or 13 to present on their aviation topic.  Presentations should be 10-12 minutes with a few minutes for questions.  A strict 15 minute maximum will be applied to ensure all groups have an equal amount of time for their presentations. Specific grading criteria will be provided when the presentation is introduced during the study period.

Due: Task B: Groups will be randomly assigned a time slot during week 12 or 13 to present on their aviation topic.

-----------------------------------

Task C: Groups will also be responsible for submitting a presentation paper; that is, a written document that describes their topic. This paper will be the compilation of the individual assessments that were submitted in Week 6 (Assessment 2, Task A).  Students will have to take care to edit the final document to ensure that it has consistent voice, grammar, and writing style.

Due: Task C: The presentation paper should be submitted through learnonline by 5:00PM on the Friday of Week 13.

Academic Integrity

UniSA is committed to fostering and preserving the scholarly values of curiosity, experimentation, critical appraisal and integrity. Students are expected to demonstrate the highest standards of academic integrity.

Academic integrity is a term used at university to describe honest behaviour as it relates to all academic work (for example papers written by staff, student assignments, conduct in exams, etc) and is the foundation of university life. One of the main principles is respecting other people's ideas and not claiming them as your own. Anyone found to have used another person's ideas without proper acknowledgement is deemed guilty of Academic Misconduct and the University considers this to be a serious matter.
