Topic outline

  • UniSA College (of University of South Australia) is closely aligned with Australia’s widening participation targets. Our pre-degree programs provides equity groups with a supported transition into university wherein they earn a score for undergraduate application. Students develop academic literacies and competencies to succeed in a tertiary environment. Research suggests that providing engagement opportunities for students who ‘battle’ with ‘procedures that are difficult to understand and a language which is “alien” to them’ (Krause 2005, p.11) requires the development of a responsive teaching framework.

Since its establishment in 2011, UniSA College has strived to provide opportunities in a responsive framework which offers a ‘second chance’ for those who have struggled in other educational systems. As a teaching collective, we have developed the following elements that define our pedagogical approaches:

UniSA College Senior Lecturer, Jennifer Stokes first published on enabling pedagogies in 2014 , that was further developed by Anna Bennett and others at the University of Newcastle in 2016. Enabling educators and practitioners have continued to build on and advance the concept of enabling pedagogies. See:

We also provide opportunities to explore enabling pedagogical approaches in our professional development workshops that we run throughout the year (see this page for more information).
