How do I get the list of references to appear at the end of my thesis instead of at the end of each chapter? I have nearly finished my thesis and each chapter is a separate word document. I have used EndNote to insert in-text citations.

You could use a thesis template. Ensure each of your documents are unformatted and paste them into the chapters provided in the template. When you format your bibliography, all of your references will appear at the end of the document.

Another method is to use Master documents. You will need to consult Word's help files for more detailed information about master documents. Ensure your documents are unformatted before placing into a master document. Whatever method you choose, remember to preserve your original documents in case a problem occurs.

How can I make sure that my headings stay with the following text? Sometimes they are detached by page breaks.

If you are using a properly constructed template, headings should automatically stay with the following text. If your template does not include this facility try the following

    1. Highlight an example of your highest heading level
    2. Select Format > Style and Formatting
    3. Go to Pick formatting to apply and click on the Heading style you wish to modify (it will appear in the box Formatting of selected text)
    4. Right click in Formatting of selected text
    5. Select Modify > Format > Paragraph
    6. Click on the tag Line and Page Breaks
    7. Click in box Keep with next
    8. Click [OK]
    9. Click once in Add to template
    10. Click [OK]

Repeat for an example of each heading level.

    What are widows and orphans?

Widow the last line of a paragraph is separated from the rest of the paragraph by a page break Orphan the first line of a paragraph is separated from the rest of the paragraph by a page break Widows and orphans detract from the appearance of your document and reduce its readability.

    If widows or orphans occur:

    • Highlight the whole offending paragraph
    • Repeat all the above steps for correcting detached headings
    • At Step 6, tick the box Widow/Orphan control.
