- All children under the age of eight years must have an escort with them at all times.  This may be a parent, guardian or a member of nursing staff.  Remember that as a radiographer you have to leave the patient while you process and check films.

.

- A parent (only one) and a nurse can be invited into the x-ray room with those children who need them for emotional support and sometimes to help in physical restraint, however you need to ensure that:

1. Females – if they think they may be pregnant should not be in the room whilst exposures are made.  They can come in and undress the child, leave and return after exposures are made.

2. Those in the x-ray room, standing with the child, wear a lead apron.

.

- Small babies need to be kept warm at all times as they lose body heat rapidly.  Wrap them up in a blanket or for longer examinations please use a portable heater.  Ask a member of staff for this.

.

- When a toddler or young child is on the examination table, never turn your back or leave the bedside if you are the only person in attendance.  These children can easily roll off the table.  If a parent or nurse has been holding a child, after the examination you either take the lead apron from them whilst they are alongside the child, or you hold onto the toddler whilst the nurse or parent hangs up the apron.
