Aims: To ensure student radiographers have explicit permissions to perform an examination and consider it completed

To ensure student radiographers have the appropriate level of supervision during an examination

Definition of Supervision

Radiographers are responsible for examinations carried out by students under their supervision. The level of supervision should be appropriate to the learning needs and the experience of the student. This should be negotiated between the student and the supervisor.

 Before the examination

    • The Student must show all request forms for the patients they are about to examine to a Radiographer for checking.  This Radiographer will be considered to be the “supervisor”
    • The student and supervisor should discuss how the examination is to be performed, and the level of supervision required (e.g. from direct visual supervision, to discussion prior to the examination, leading to the examination to be carried out unaided). This level is ultimately at the discretion of the supervisor.

After the examination

    • The student should review the images with (when possible) the same radiographer, taking the opportunity to learn from them and demonstrate their own knowledge.
    • The student should record their name and projections performed on the request form/ESMI system.

Students should consider their limitations and be up front and explicit about their supervision needs.  If in doubt, ask for direct visual supervision.
