4176                ULCERATIVE COLITIS WITH PERI-COLIC ABSCESS

No clinical information is available.

The specimen consists of 20 cms of the colon opened to show extensive ulcerative colitis with marked pseudo-polyposis throughout.  In the centre there is constriction of the lumen by what was thought to be an annular carcinoma some 6 cms in length.  There is a pericolic abscess on the right side in the thick layer of fat surrounding the colon.  Histology shows ulceration in the proximal length of vessel confined largely to the mucosa and penetrating is oedematous.  Similar changes are present in the region of the supposed tumour, but there is no histological evidence of malignancy in the section taken.
