15984              PORTAL CIRRHOSIS WITH SUBPHRENIC ABSCESS

The patient was a woman aged 68 who was known to be a heavy drinker and had been admitted on two or three occasions with abdominal pain and jaundice. She also had a longstanding left hemiplegia. At postmortem there was gross liver cirrhosis and a right subphrenic abscess.

The specimen is portion of the liver showing classical nodular portal cirrhosis and the wall of an abscess overlying the anterior and upper surface of the right lobe. The cut surface shows rather ill-defined regeneration nodules in a background of dense interstitial fibrosis.
