The patient was a man aged 85 who died of carcinoma of the prostate with renal failure.  At postmortem there were metastases in the lumbar and thoracic vertebrae, the ribs and the lungs.

The specimen consists of a mucocoele of the appendix, which measures 9 cms in length and 3 cms in diameter.  The occluded proximal end of the appendix projects as a blunt rounded swelling into the lumen of the caecum.  The caecal mucosa also shows melanosis coli.
