10776              RENAL PAPILLARY NECROSIS AND PYELONEPHRITIS

 

The patient was a diabetic woman aged 58 who had long-standing urinary infection.  The specimen consists of the kidneys divided in the coronal plane.  Each kidney shows gross suppurative pyelonephritis with marked papillary necrosis and the extension of suppuration in a linear fashion out to the capsules of the organ.  Both kidneys are grossly swollen and each measures 14 cms in length.
