25214              CYLINDRICAL ATHEROSCLEROTIC ANEURYSM

The patient was a man aged 72. Four years previously the prostate had been removed for carcinoma and thereafter he was treated with oestrogen. A further transurethral resection was carried out two years later. At his final admission there was local recurrence of the tumour and metastases in the iliac nodes and the lungs. The breasts were enlarged. He died after 10 days in hospital from lobar pneumonia.

The specimen consists of the lower 22 cms of the aorta and the origins of both common iliac arteries. The aorta shows marked ulcerative atherosclerosis with some aneurysm formation just above the bifurcation. Large masses of antemortem thrombus are present on the internal surface. Both common iliac arteries are greatly dilated but not obviously atherosclerotic.
