17028              MASSIVE INFARCTION

The patient was an 83 year old woman who died of bronchopneumonia.  The kidney lesion was an incidental finding at necropsy.  The aorta was severely affected with atheroma, as were both renal arteries.

The specimen consists of a half kidney.  The external surface is irregularly granular with large, pale irregular depressed infarcted areas which are also seen on the cut surface.  The margin of the infarct is not congested.  The cortex and medulla in the non-affected areas are relatively normal.
