23523              LOBAR PNEUMONIA

The patient was an 86 year old man whose condition had been deteriorating since a heart attack three years before his death.  He had been noted to be anaemic and to be losing weight over that time, especially during the latter months.  He was finally admitted because of the general deterioration.  He was noted to be pale on admission but physical examination was otherwise unremarkable.  He was febrile whilst in hospital and died.

The specimen consists of a portion of the right lung.  There is an extensive area of uniform pneumonic consolidation in the posterior segment of the upper lobe.  This process is in the stage of grey hepatisation.  The remainder of the lung shows mild focal emphysema with anthracosis.
