2966                RUPTURE OF A MALARIAL SPLEEN

 

A Norwegian aged 35 was admitted to the Parkside Mental Hospital on 28.5.29 in an emaciated state with advanced cerebrospinal syphilis.  On 9.7.29 malarial blood was injected and patient had his first “paroxysm” some 11 days later.  These continued daily until 28.7.29 when the patient appeared jaundiced and died.  At necropsy the abdomen contained 5 pints of blood.

 

The spleen is moderately enlarged with a tear 7 cms long involving the concave surface anterior to the hilum.
