50092/83         MASSIVE PULMONARY EMBOLUS

The specimen consists of a lung in which the main lower lobe pulmonary artery is seen to be occluded by a recent thrombus. The coiled pattern of the thrombus indicates that it did not form in situ but came from elsewhere. Smaller are seen in several of the larger upper lobe pulmonary arteries. A wedge-shaped area of recent lung infarction is present at the base of the lower lobe.
