15834              PROSTATIC CALCULI

A man aged 66 died during an exploratory laparotomy which revealed a ruptured atheromatous abdominal aortic aneurysm. Twelve months previously he had developed a perineal abscess with subsequent urinary fistulae producing a "watering-can" scrotum. IVP showed good function in the left kidney and slight delay in the right.

The specimen consists of the prostate and bladder seen from below. The prostate contains several large irregular calculi lying in cavities lined by hyaline fibrous tissue without gross evidence of infection. The bladder is small and hypertrophied but it too is not obviously infected.
