50354/82         TUBERCULOUS BRONCHOPNEUMONIA WITH MILIARY TUBERCULOSIS

The specimen shows that the pleura is thickened and much of the lower portion of the lung shows pale consolidation. Within the consolidated areas are numerous small white foci between 1 and 3 mm in diameter, these are the miliary tuberculous foci. Overwhelming tuberculous infection in this man developed after Prednisolone and Chlorambucil were used for chronic lymphocytic leukaemia. This treatment, and his underlying disease, would both lower his natural defence mechanism to infection.
