13544              HEALING FRACTURE OF RADIUS

The patient was a 20 year old girl who had suffered from severe mental and physical retardation for 18 months due to subacute inclusion encephalitis. The immediate cause of death was extensive pneumonia.

The specimen was an incidental finding and consists of an adult radius which shows a healing fracture. The bones are very slightly misaligned and the gap is bridged by callus. There is an extensive callus 10 cms x 3 cms surrounding the middle one-third of the bone. It can be seen to consist of slightly haemorrhagic osseofibrous tissue which is surrounded by an intact periosteum.
