18127              BRONCHIAL LIPOMA

The patient was a man aged 50 with a 6 year history of cough with sputum.  X-ray revealed a mass occluding a bronchus.  On biopsy this proved to be a lipoma.  The affected portion of lung was resected.

The specimen of lung consists of this portion of lung sectioned and opened out to show a pedunculated yellow lipoma 2 cms in diameter projecting into and occluding a bronchus.  Distal to the tumour there is cylindrical bronchiectasis with mucinous exudate in the lumina and there is interstitial fibrosis in the intervening lung tissue.  Remnants of fibrous pleural adhesions are present on the surface.
