24365              THYROID GLAND - ADENOMATOUS ENLARGEMENT

This elderly widow died with resistant cardiac failure.  She first developed symptoms 2 years ago and was found to be thyrotoxic, for which she received Neomercazole.  She had a partial thyroidectomy 30 years ago for symptoms due to pressure of the thyroid gland on the trachea.

The specimen of the thyroid gland shows a large fleck of calcification within the substance of a shrunken and fibrous left lobe.  The right lobe shows marked adenomatous hyperplasia with several islands of thyroid tissue separated by fibrous septa.  There is some interstitial haemorrhage and some foci of calcification.
