18718              SPLENIC INFARCTION

This 52-year old woman died of pneumonia which was a terminal event in a long illness characterised by pyrexia and haemolytic anaemia.

The specimen consists of the medial half of an enlarged spleen. There are multiple irregularly shaped pale confluent infarctions which are surrounded by haemorrhagic margins. The remainder of the splenic tissue is congested. At autopsy the splenic vein was found to be thrombosed.
