13934              HYDATID CYST OF LINGULA

This patient was a 19 year old girl who had lived on a sheep farm down near Bordertown all her life.  She had no symptoms, but a rounded opacity was found in the left lung at routine

X-ray survey.  The Casoni test was strongly positive.  The lingula was resected and the patient recovered uneventfully.

The specimen shows this cut portion of lung containing a unilocular cyst 6 cms in diameter.  In the fresh state hydatid sand (scolices) could be seen on the inner surface.  The surrounding lung is compressed but appears normal.
