This patient was a man aged 63 who was an inmate of a mental hospital.  He choked on a portion of steak and quickly died.

 

The specimen shows a large mass of meat measuring 5 x 3 x 4 cms impacted in the hypopharynx overlying the entrance to the larynx.  There were many subpleural asphyxial haemorrhages in the lung at postmortem.
