17106              THYROID ADENOMATA

The patient was a man aged 58 who died from lung abscess complicating laryngectomy for carcinoma of the larynx.

The specimen consists of a greatly enlarged thyroid. Both lobes are lobulated and divided by delicate fibrous septa. Three large rounded well-encapsulated adenomatous nodules are visible, two in one lobe and one in the other. These nodules are lobulated by dense hyaline fibrous septa and there are many areas of cellular necrosis and some haemorrhages. The lower-most nodule on the left side consists largely of hyaline connective tissue with some cysts.
