25397              CARCINOMA OF THE LOWER END OF THE URETER

The only information available about this woman aged 66, is that she had painless haematuria.

The specimen consists of the kidney together with the renal pelvis and 20 cms of the ureter. The kidney measures 8 cms in length, its substance is pale and the cortex is slightly reduced. There is marked intrarenal and extrarenal hydronephrosis, and the ureter is greatly dilated to a diameter of 1 cm. Its mucosa is slightly velvety though not obviously congested. In the lower end of the ureter there is an occluding carcinoma 5 cms in length and 2 cms in diameter. Histology shows a rather anaplastic and pleomorphic transitional-cell carcinoma of the ureter. the kidney shows some diffuse interstitial fibrosis.
