50570/82         ADENOCARCINOMA OF THE LUNG

The patient was a man aged 56.

The specimen is a slice of lung showing a peripherally-located tumour. The tumour is located at the base of the lung and is roughly spherical, involves the pleura and has caused adhesions between the pleura and the underlying diaphragm. The cut surface of the tumour is grey. The black specks are anthracotic pigment from inhaled carbon. The tumour surrounds several bronchi and has infiltrated their walls with pale tumour tissue. The hilar lymph nodes also contain small, pale areas of metastatic tumour. This adenocarcinoma is typical in that it is a peripheral tumour.
