25619              WALL OF RESECTED ABDOMINAL AORTIC ANEURYSM

The patient was a man aged 58.  A large pulsatile abdominal mass was present in the umbilical region slightly to the right of the midline.  The aortic valve was stenosed.  The abdominal mass was known to be an aneurysm, from previous attendance a year ago.  The aneurysm was resected.

The specimen consists of a nodular surfaced fibrinous heavy mass with one upper and two lower, lumina.  It represents the wall of an aneurysm stripped from the overlying adventitia.  The mass measures 13 cms in length and 8 cms in breadth.  Within the cavity and at the lower end laminated thrombus is well seen partially filling the lumina.  Histology shows dense acellular laminated fibrinous thrombus.
