16782              PERFORATED DUODENAL ULCER

 

The patient was a man aged 73 who died of general peritonitis after the perforation of a duodenal ulcer.  The specimen consists of the lower few cms of the stomach, the pyloric canal and the first part of the duodenum.  There is a small ulcer on the posterior wall of the duodenum which has ruptured externally.  The external surface is visible on the back of the specimen.  There is some hypertrophic gastritis in the pyloric antrum.
