18315              SECONDARY CARCINOMA OF THE OVARIES

The patient was a woman aged 47 who had a colectomy 20 months previously for carcinoma complicating ulcerative colitis.  The two ovaries were removed at a later operation.

The specimen consists of slices of these ovaries.  The larger measures 8 x 5 x 6 cms and the smaller measures 6 x 5 x 3 cms.  Both ovaries have an irregular nodular external surface and the cut surface shows replacement of all ovarian tissue by greyish/white tumour.  Two small cysts are present in the large ovary and 3 larger cysts in the other ovary.  There has been some bleeding into two of the latter cysts.  Histology shows infiltration by adenocarcinoma.  Some of the tumour acini are producing mucin.  The cysts in the smaller ovary are of ovarian origin.
